History
The construction of the cathedral church was conceived in 1785 in accordance with the “Plan of the Provincial City of Petrozavodsk” approved by Catherine II . With the establishment in 1828 of the Olonets diocese, the first Archbishop of Olonets and Petrozavodsk Ignatius began to petition the Holy Synod for the construction of a new cathedral.
Only thirty years later, on April 10, 1859, the Archbishop of Olonets and Petrozavodsk Arkady (Fedorov) received permission to build the cathedral. The cathedral was built according to the standard project of architect Konstantin Andreevich Ton and was similar to other churches built according to his design - the Vvedensky church of the Semenovsky regiment in St. Petersburg , built in 1842 and destroyed in 1933, and built in 1860. The Cathedral in the name of Christmas The Blessed Virgin Mary in Rostov-on-Don , preserved to this day.
The temple was built both on money allocated from the treasury and on private donations of citizens. The construction of the cathedral began on April 27, 1860. Construction was led by the provincial architect V.V. Tukhtarov , then I.F. Yarovitsky and M.P. Kalitovich .
Under the canopy of the cathedral under construction, Archimandrite Methodius Lapchinsky, rector of the Olonets Theological Seminary, was buried [1] . In 1882, the Archbishop of Olonets and Petrozavodsk Palladium was also buried under the cathedral [2] .
In the spring of 1872, an iconostasis was installed with icons painted in the Alexander Svirsky Monastery . The consecration of the main aisle in the name of the Resurrection of Christ the Savior took place on May 21, 1872 , on May 28 the consecration of the northern aisle in honor of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary took place, and on August 13 the southern aisle in honor of the Ascension of the Lord.
In 1875, the cathedral was renamed in honor of the Descent of the Holy Spirit (exchanged initiations with the "old" cathedral located next to it).
In November 1916, Bishop Olonetsky and Petrozavodsk Nikanor was buried in the fence of the cathedral behind the altar.
In 1923-1924, divine services in the cathedral were conducted by the renovationist bishop of the Karelian diocese, Alexander (Nadezhin) and his supporters. After the Renovationists left the cathedral and went to serve in the Holy Cross Exaltation Cemetery Church , supporters of Patriarch Tikhon who returned to the cathedral re-consecrated the temple [3] .
Closed by decision of the Presidium of the Petrozavodsk City Council in 1930. On May 27, 1930, a public cafeteria No. 13 [4] was opened in the cathedral, and a parachute tower was built on the roof of the building.
March 20, 1936 Petrozavodsk City Council decided to demolish the building of the cathedral. The demolition of the cathedral was completed by May 1, 1936 .
