History
The airline was established on June 25, 1988 on the basis of the East China (Huadong) Regional Directorate of the General Directorate of Civil Aviation of China. In 1997, China Eastern Airlines took over control of the unprofitable airline China General Aviation , at the same time the company became the first airline in the country whose shares traded on global stock markets.
In 1998 , China Cargo Airlines , a joint venture with China Ocean Shipping, was founded. In 2001, China Eastern Airlines acquired Air Great Wall , and in 2002 , another two major local carriers were acquired - China Yunnan Airlines and China Northwest Airlines .
The Chinese government owns a 61.64% stake in China Eastern Airlines, the remaining securities are traded on stock markets. In January 2005 , the company employed 16,435 people.
On April 20, 2006, media reported that the Chinese government could sell up to 20% of its own shares to a number of foreign investors, including Singapore Airlines , Emirates Airline and Japan Airlines . Singapore Airlines has confirmed the negotiations [1] .
Financial Performance
In fiscal 2008-09, the company received a net loss of 15.3 billion yuan ($ 2.2 billion). The enormous losses are explained by the unfavorably concluded hedging contracts for the supply of aviation kerosene in the face of strong fluctuations in the prices on the fuel market, as well as a decrease in passenger traffic.
