The film was first shown at the Sundance Festival on January 17, 2009 . When You're Strange received, in general, approving reviews, however, a significant part of the audience considered the film spoiling the narrative (in the first version of the film, Tom DiChillo himself was the narrator). After receiving many complaints, the director decided to re-play the film and invite Johnny Depp to the role of narrator. A few months later, DiChillo announced the work on the film "about finished." An updated version was shown at the Los Angeles Film Festival on June 21, 2009 . Cinema rentals (in the USA ) began on April 9, 2010 , and a soundtrack called When You're Strange: Music from the Motion Picture went on sale March 30 ^[1] . Hire in Russia only began in early December 2010.
