Alan was the son of Ruairi , the ruler of Garmoran and the northern part of the Hebrides in the 1209-1240s, and the younger brother of Dougal III , king of the Islands . In 1263, together with his brother, he participated in the Norwegian invasion of Lennox , but after the Treaty of Perth in 1266, he sided with Scotland . In 1275, Alan supported the Scottish king during the rebellion on the Isle of Man and provided his fleet to crush the rebellion. It was under Alan that the penetration of feudalism and feudal institutions ( homage , chivalry , vassal relations) began on the northwestern coast of Scotland. Unlike his brother Dougal III, Alan recognized the suzerainty of the Scottish king and participated along with other state barons in the noble assemblies and parliaments of Scotland. So, in 1284, Alan was mentioned among the members of the council in Skun , who recognized the rights of young Margarita , the granddaughter of King Alexander III , to the Scottish throne.

Alan had a daughter, Christiana , who inherited Garmoran after the death of her father. In addition to her, Alan also had two illegitimate sons - Ruairi and Lahlan, who participated in the Scottish independence wars on the side of Robert Bruce .
