Construction
An order for the construction of a second Ticonderoga-class cruiser was issued by the Ingalls Shipbuilding shipbuilding company on April 28, 1980. Unlike the lead ship , due to the enormous cost of construction, it was classified from the very beginning as a missile cruiser and not a destroyer .
A formal ship laying ceremony at a shipyard in Pascagul , Mississippi took place on October 19, 1981, and launching on January 17, 1983. Mary Mathews , a business man from Yorktown , Virginia , donated with her husband to her godmother . a large sum of money to the fleet.
After completing the tests, the cruiser was handed over to the U.S. Navy on Independence Day on July 4, 1984. In addition to Matthews, the ceremony was also attended by Minister of the Sea John Lehman, Virginia Senator John Warner and Congresswoman Herbert Bateman.
History
On February 12, 1988, American ships — the Yorktown missile cruiser and the Karon destroyer — invaded Soviet territorial waters in the Sevastopol area and headed along the Crimean coast towards Yalta . The Americans did not respond to warning signals. The Soviet patrol ship Bezavezhetny was forced to do a “ bulk ”, having touched the left side of the American cruiser, damaged the rail and crushed the harpoon missile launcher. After the second “bulk”, Yorktown hastily shifted the steering wheel to the right and left Soviet territorial waters. He was followed by "Caron", which made "bulk" patrol ship " SKR-6 ."
