In 2007, former US Senator George John Mitchell , who investigated cases of doping in baseball, accused Clemens of using anabolic steroids at the end of his career. Clemens himself, before Congress, vowed to deny the use of illegal drugs.
The early years
Clemens was born in Dayton ( Ohio ) in the family of Bill and Bess Clemens and was the youngest of five children [1] . His grandfather Joseph Clemens immigrated from Germany in the 1880s [2] . When Roger was still in his infancy, his parents separated and he continued to live with his mother, who soon married Woody Bucher, whom Clemens considers to be his father. Bucher died when Roger was nine years old and, according to Clemens, the only time he envied other players was when he saw other children in a club locker room with his parents [3] . Until 1977, he lived in Vandalia (Ohio), and went to high school in Houston ( Texas ). At Spring Woods, he played baseball under the guidance of coach Charles Majorana [4] . He also played football and basketball. [3] In his final year of high school, he was spotted by scouts of the Philadelphia Phillies and Minnesota Twins and asked him to sign a contract with them, but Roger decided to go to university [5] .
