Born March 1, 1883 in the family of a naval officer, later Rear Admiral, mayor and chief of the Berdyansk port Peter Petrovich Schmidt (1828-1888), half-brother of Lieutenant Schmidt . Orthodox. He knew French and English.
Family: single (1904). Married, 1 son (1914), (1916). Wife Nadezhda Alekseevna, son Vladimir, stepson Alexei Sergeyevich Golovachev (US Army officer).
