Biography

Coat of arms of Ed Burgundsky, Earl of Nevers, Auxerre and Tonner

In 1248, a contract was concluded under which Ed married the wealthy heiress Matilda de Bourbon-Dampierre , daughter and heiress of Arsambo IX Young , Senor de Bourbon, as well as great-granddaughter of Matilda de Courtenay , the ruler of the Burgundian counties of Nevers , Auxerre and Tonner . Thanks to this marriage, Ed, the heir to the Duke of Burgundy Hugo IV , was to add these counties to the Duchy of Burgundy in the future, significantly expanding its territory. At the same time, Ed's younger brother Jean married Arshambo's younger sister, Agnes , thanks to which he was to inherit the lord Bourbon .

However, Ed had to wait for the bulk of the legacy for a long time. After the death in 1254 of his wife’s mother, Yolanda de Chatillon , Ed and Matilda inherited Donzi , Persh-Gue and Monmirai . Only in 1257 after the death of Countess Matilda de Courtenay, Ed and Matilda received Nevers, Auxerre and Tonner.

In 1262, Ed's wife, Matilda , died. The spouses did not have sons, only four daughters - Yolanda , Margarita , Alice and Jeanne, who were supposed to inherit the possessions. But, since the daughters were minors, Ed continued to govern the counties.

In 1265, Ed went to the Kingdom of Jerusalem , where he died under the protection of Acre . According to Situ's obituary, he died on August 4, 1266 . Ed's death led Never, Auxerre, and Tonner to separate. Initially, Yolanda, Ed's eldest daughter, tried to keep all three counties behind her, but this caused dissatisfaction among the younger daughters, who claimed their part in the inheritance. They appealed to the Paris Parliament, as a result of which in 1273 only County Nevers was retained for Yolanda, the remaining two counties went to Margarita and Alice.
