Description
Length 1.5-3.5 cm. Coloring black, in some species the front part of the abdomen is red. The wings are darkened and have a dark edge. Females have partially red legs.
They hunt for insects (catching locusts, grasshoppers and crickets), which are killed or paralyzed, and then transferred to a nest where they feed their larvae. Nest in the soil.
Distribution
Holarctic : North Africa , southern Europe , east up to Mongolia. The northern border of distribution passes in Germany, an isolated population is found on the island of Gotland and is the only one in Scandinavia. There are about 10 species in the Nearctic [3] . Palearctic : 19 species, Nearctic : 13, Neotropics : 31, Afrotropics : 30, Indomalaysia: 22, Australasia + Oceania : 34 species [4] .
