Biography

He graduated from the Physics Department of Moscow State University ( 1951 ). He worked at the Institute of Physics and Energy ( Obninsk ) on the theoretical problems of nuclear energy .

Since 1956, he worked at the Institute of Atomic Energy (IAE) to them. I. V. Kurchatov . The main research focuses on plasma physics and the problem of controlled thermonuclear fusion . From 1976 to 1998, he was the chief editor of the journal Uspekhi Fizicheskikh Nauk [1] .

Died August 19, 1998 , buried at Troyekurovsky cemetery [2] .

Scientific Activities

Predicted some types of plasma instability and laid the foundations of the theory of transport phenomena (diffusion and heat conduction) in a turbulent plasma. Gave a quantitative explanation of the phenomenon of anomalous plasma behavior in a magnetic field . A number of papers are devoted to the problem of plasma thermal insulation in toroidal magnetic chambers - tokamaks .

He developed a theory of weak turbulence , taking into account the scattering of waves on particles and the so-called processes of wave decay. In 1986 he created the theory of plasma self-organization in tokamak. Several works have been devoted to the study of the stability of the Earth’s radiation belts , nonlinear wave processes, radiation transfer, and the behavior of matter in superstrong magnetic fields [3] .

Boris Borisovich Kadomtsev - the author of the scientific discovery "Tokokonvektivnyaya plasma instability", which is listed in the State Register of Discoveries of the USSR under the number 78 with a priority of December 14, 1957 [4]

International scientific activities

B. B. Kadomtsev took an active part in the international cooperation of scientists on the problem of controlled thermonuclear fusion. He was elected Chairman of the Plasma Physics Section of the European Community , and also Chairman of the International Scientific and Technical Advisory Committee of the ITER International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor Project, developed under the auspices of the IAEA [5] .
