History
The history of music for brass ensembles dates back to the antiphonic music of the Italian Renaissance ( Andrea and Giovanni Gabrieli , Girolamo Frescobaldi ). However, in the XVII - XVIII centuries, this genre of playing music was almost completely forgotten. In the middle of the 19th century, music for brass ensembles began to revive, thanks in large part to Hector Berlioz , who made extensive use of copper in his compositions.
For a long time, the first original compositions for the brass quintet were considered 4 quintets of the Russian composer Victor Ewald , written at the turn of the XIX - XX centuries . The original composition of the instruments, for which the Ewald quintets were written, was different from the modern one and consisted of 2 cornets , althorn , baritone and tuba . However, recently discovered 12 quintets of the French composer Jean Francois Bellon , written in the 40s of the XIX century , that is, about 60 years earlier than the works of Ewald. His works in the original were instrumented for flugelhorn , cornet , horn , trombone and oficleleid .
The breaststroke quintet in the modern sense appeared in the USA in the middle of the 20th century . The first ensembles of this type were Chicago Brass Quintet and New York Brass Quintet , respectively consisting of musicians from the New York Philharmonic and Chicago Symphony Orchestras .
