Biography
Origin
The origin of Rostan is not exactly established. It is assumed that he could be one of those ready who fled to the territory of the Frankish state from the power of Muslims who conquered the Iberian Peninsula at the beginning of the VIII century .
It is likely that he was the one person with the Rostand, who in the summer of 782, among the four on behalf of Charlemagne traveled to Septimania . June 3 Rostan took part in the hearing in Narbonne , which was a suit of the head of , Bishop Daniel to Earl Milo . According to the decision adopted at the meeting, more than fifty suburban estates, as well as three churches that had previously passed to the count, were returned to the Diocese of Narbona. Here on 5 July, in Roston, Rostan confirmed the charitable charter of the Diocese of Narbona [1] [2] [3] given by Count.
Getting County
In 785, according to the Chronicle of Moissac , citizens and nobles of Girona expelled the Muslim wali (governor) and transferred the city under the protection of Charles the Great, King of the Frankish State [4] . Girona was the first major city of Catalonia to come under the control of the Frankish state. It is believed that its acquisition was the impetus for the resumption of the aggressive policy of Charlemagne in relation to the Muslim territories, interrupted by the defeat in the battle in the Ronsevalles gorge in 778. Included in the Aquitaine kingdom , Girona became the center of the county of the same name, which included, in addition to the city and its environs, Pagi Ampuryas and Besalú .
The first Earl of Girona was appointed Rostan, who from the very beginning of the reign began to strengthen his possessions: he restored the walls of the city and facilitated the resettlement of the Goths from the border regions of Cordoba emirate, which he controlled.
Moor Wars
In the 790s, the Moors made several attempts to stop the Frankish offensive in Catalonia. The most significant campaign was organized by Muslims in 793, when a large army under the command of Abd al-Malik ibn Abd al-Wahid ibn Mugit invaded the Frankish state, besieged Girona, but because of measures taken in advance by Count Rostan, the city should be taken it couldn’t. Departing from Girona, the army of Muslims moved deep into Septimania, ruining everything in its path. Moors burned the suburbs of Narbonne and in the battle of the Orbo River defeated the Count of Toulouse Guillaume Zhelonskomu . However, the significant losses they suffered in this battle forced the Muslims to turn back and return to the lands of the Cordoba emirate [2] [5] .
Having repelled the attack on his possessions, Count Rostand in 795 helped organize a raid by the noble Goth Juan in the vicinity of Barcelona . In turn, in this and in 796 years the Moors again have made attacks on the land Zhironskogo County.
Participation in the conquest of Barcelona
In 801, Rostand was mentioned as one of the military leaders who played a significant role in the French conquest of Barcelona . By order of the King of Aquitaine Louis the Pious in February of this year the count of Girona was assigned command of the third part of the Frankish army, which first laid siege to the city. After the army of the Moors was defeated by Guillaume Zhelonsky and Count of Narbon Ademar , trying to break through to the city, the rest of the Franks joined the besiegers. The siege of Barcelona ended on April 4, 801 with the capture of the city [2] [6] . Shortly thereafter, the lands conquered by the Franks of the Pyrenees , the Emperor Charlemagne was established Spanish brand , includes several counties, including the county of Girona.
The participation of Count Rostand in the conquest of Barcelona is the last evidence of him in historical sources. The exact date and circumstances under which Rostan ceased to be the Count of Girona are unknown: the first document mentioning his successor, Count Odilon , dated as early as April 2, 812 [7] .
