Biography

Odilon became in the county of Girona (which also included the Besalou pag ) the successor of Count Rostand . The exact date of this event has not been established: the last report of historical sources about Rostan dates back to 801, the first mention of Odilon as Count of Girona dates back to 812. Perhaps, when appointing Odilon, the Ampurias pag, which was part of it earlier, was allocated from the Girona county: converted into an independent county , it was given under the control of Count Ermenger .

Counties of the Spanish brand at the beginning of the 9th century

On April 2, 812, a charter of the emperor of the West , Charlemagne , dated by him in favor of Gothic immigrants who fled to the Frankish state from areas of the Iberian Peninsula conquered by Muslims, is dated. The document was issued by Emperor Karl in response to a petition submitted to him by a delegation of immigrants [1] for the actions of the counts who ruled the empire’s land bordering the Cordoban emirate . In the charter, Charlemagne ordered Odilon and the other counts of the Spanish and Gothic stamps [2] who complained to stop harassing Gothic settlers, reduce the state taxes imposed on them and abandon the practice of seizing their lands. The emperor assigned control over the implementation of this decree to his son, King Aquitaine Louis , and to Archbishop Arles John II . Subsequently, Emperor Louis I the Pious (in 815 and 816) also gave charters in support of these settlers. During his reign, Odilon contributed to the settlement of the empty lands of his county. This is evidenced by the charter of the Emperor Louis the Pious, dated 822, which states that the governor of Girona gave such permission in 812 to Abbot Bonita, who founded the monastery of San Esteve de Bagnolas on the county lands.

The exact date and circumstances under which Odilon ceased to be the Count of Girona is unknown. In 820, when the emperor Louis deprived the Count of Barcelona of Bera of all his possessions, the county of Girona was also mentioned. The information of one of the charters from 817 that connects a certain count of Ragonfred with Girona , modern historians consider a message about the trip missi dominici (sovereign envoy), sent to the county for inspection.

Notes

  1. ↑ The delegation included 41 Goth settlers and 2 priests.
