Life Story

According to one legend, the veneration of Saint Fidelia is associated with the veneration of the holy warriors Karpofor and Exant . According to this legend, the saints Fidelius, Karpofor and Exant were Roman soldiers from the Thebes of Legion who left the service during the times of Emperor Maximian . They were captured and executed in Como .

Another legend says that St. Fidelius was an officer who escorted Christian captives to Milan . Among these captives was the holy martyr Alexander Bergamsky . Saint Fidelia contributed to the release of five of these captives. Together with the saints Karpofor and Exant, they went to the Alps , but were executed in Como [1] . It is believed that Saint Fidelius was tortured on the northern shore of Lake Como , not far from Samolaco . [2]

The relics of the saint rest in Milan, Como and Arona .

The veneration of St. Fidelia goes to the centuries. [3] At the beginning of the 6th century, St. Magnus Felix Ennodius describes the tomb in Como with the relics of the martyr. [3] Messages of miracles at the grave contributed to the growth of veneration of the saint. Shortly before the year 1000, the Sanfedelino temple was built on the site of the former, simpler chapel, built around the 4th century. [3]

The holy relics were transferred to Arona during the war of Milan and Como. In Arona, the presence of the relics of saints Fidelia and Karpofor is confirmed by documents dated 1259 and 1321. [2]

In Como, an entry from the year 964 on the transfer of relics from the place of martyrdom to Como itself in that year was preserved. [four]

Church of Saint Fidelia , Milan

In 1576, Karl Borromeo transferred the relics of Saints Fidelia and Carpophorus to Milan. Although the veneration of the saints in Aorn was minimal, the action of Borromeo annoyed the inhabitants there. As a compromise, Borromeo returned the left forearm of both saints to Arona. It was March 13th. The city council, which was under pressure from the population about the return of the relics, decided to hold an annual celebration on this day, the importance of which increased in the following centuries. At the same time, they began to celebrate the day of memory of Saints Felin and Gratian . [2]

In Milan, Borromeo commissioned the construction of the church of St. Fidelia Pellegrino Tibaldi , who built it in 1559 .
