About the album
A Trick of the Tail was the band’s first album recorded after the departure of lead singer Peter Gabriel (who left the band during the tour in support of The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway ). The remaining members of the group, making sure of the irreversibility of what happened, were nevertheless ready to continue working together and wanted to prove to critics and journalists that they were a team of authors capable of creating good music [3] .
The material for the album was already completely ready, but a replacement for Gabriel was still not found [3] . After listening to about 400 vocalists, the group decided that drummer Phil Collins would take Gabriel's place, although Collins believed this the least [3] . He later said: “I didn’t want to be a drummer - this is what I was doing. This is my territory ” [4] . The second drummer was Bill Bruford ( Yes , King Crimson ), who played with Collins in Brand X [3] .
The basis for A Trick of the Tail was the outline of Tony Banks for a possible solo album [5] . The text “Squonk” tells the story of a fictional creature - a snatch from William T. Cox’s book “Terrifying creatures of forests and some animals of deserts and mountains” of 1910. The cover design was done by Storm Torgeson 's Hipgnosis Studio [6] ; its spread depicts heroes of songs, in particular, the sister of mercy from “Entangled”, the robber from the song “Robbery, Assault and Battery”, the hunter and squonk from “Squonk”, the monster from the title song and the metaphorical image of old people recalling youth from the song “ Ripples. "
The success of concert performances and positive reviews allowed Genesis to gain a “second wind” [3] . Peter Gabriel attended the band's performance at Hammersmith Odeon: “Everything was more natural than I expected. Except that I was a little nervous during the performance of “Supper's Ready” - as if someone had hooked my insides on themselves ” [3] .
The album sold well [3] and received gold sales status in the UK [7] and in the USA [8] .
