History

The party was founded by lawyer Joseph Dankwa in 1946. In 1947, Kwame Nkrumah returned to Ghana as General Secretary of the party. The key figures in the party at that moment were the so-called “ The Big Six ” ( Ebenezer Ako-Adzhei , Edward Akufo-Addo , Joseph Dankva, Kwame Nkruma , Emmanuel Obesebi-Lumpti , William Ofori Atta . The party demanded that the country be granted independence "as soon as possible" [1] [2] .

Nkrumah was the leader of the more radical wing of the party, Dankwa the leader of the more moderate. In 1948, due to ideological differences and differences in assessments of the situation in the country, Nkruma and his supporters left the Joint Convention and established the People’s Party Convention the following year. Of the Big Six, Nkrumu also supported Ebenezer Ako-Adzhei [1] [2] [3] .

In 1951, the Joint Convention took part in the first elections to the Legislative Assembly on the Gold Coast. Following the election results, the party received only 2 deputy seats out of 38, while the People’s Party of the Convention - 34. After unsuccessful participation in the elections, the Joint Convention decided to cease operations. Former members joined the Ghana Congress Party , which was created the following year, which later transformed into the United Party [4] [5] [6] .
