The 12th World Volleyball Championship for men was held from October 18 to October 28, 1990 in three cities of Brazil with the participation of 16 national teams. For the first time in its history, the Italian team won the championship title.

Participating teams
- Brazil is the host country;
- USA , USSR , Bulgaria , Cuba , France , Argentina , Czechoslovakia - following the results of the 1986 World Cup ;
- Italy , South Korea , Canada , Venezuela , Cameroon - following the results of the continental championships of 1989;
- Sweden , Netherlands , Japan - according to the results of world qualification.
- USA , USSR , Bulgaria , Cuba , France , Argentina , Czechoslovakia - following the results of the 1986 World Cup ;
Qualification
Championship System
16 finalists of the World Cup in the first stage are divided into 4 groups. The winners of the groups go directly to the quarter-finals of the playoffs. Teams that took 2nd and 3rd places in groups form 4 pairs of the 1/8 finals, the winners of which also reach the quarter-finals. The 5th – 8th and 9–12th places in the playoff system were played by the teams that lost in the 1/4 and 1/8 finals, respectively. The 13-16th places in the round-robin tournament were played by the teams that took the last places in the preliminary groups.
