Internal ballistics is the science of the movement of a projectile in the channel of a gun’s barrel under the influence of powder gases, as well as the laws of other processes that occur when a shot is fired in the barrel channel or the chamber of a powder rocket. Together with external ballistics, it is the science of the movement of shells , bullets, mines, unguided missiles, air bombs - ballistics .
The scientific basis of internal ballistics is higher mathematics , gas dynamics , thermodynamics , thermochemistry ( theory of combustion of gunpowder ) [1] .
Internal ballistics is an important subject for designers and users of firearms .
Shot Periods
Internal ballistics studies the shot as a complex process of converting the chemical energy of gunpowder into heat, and then into the mechanical work of the projectile and moving parts of the gun . To study the process, the following periods are distinguished in the phenomenon of a shot [1] :
- preliminary - from the moment the ignition of the charge starts until the moment the projectile (bullet) cuts into the rifling of the barrel;
- the first (main) - from the moment of the end of the incision of the leading belts to the moment of the end of the burning of the powder;
- the second - from the moment of the end of the combustion of the powder charge until the moment of departure from the bore;
- the period of aftereffect of the powder gases on the projectile and the barrel - from the departure of the projectile from the bore to the termination of the effect of gases on it ( intermediate ballistics ).
Sections of Internal Ballistics
The main sections of internal ballistics are:
- pyrostatics
- pyrodynamics
- ballistic design of guns , missiles , small arms
Internal ballistics also includes a special section of ballistics - intermediate ballistics .
