Alexander Bergamsky

Alexander (+ c. 296 , or 300 or 303 , Rome [1] or Bergamo [2] ) is a warrior, a martyr from Bergamo . Memorial Day - August 26, May 5 (transfer of relics), April 30 ( Armenian Church ), February 25 ( Coptic Church ).

Life

St. Alexander is considered the centurion of Thebaid Legion . According to one legend, in the presence of Emperor Maximian, he refused to bow to idols and trampled them, after which he was truncated with a sword.

According to another legend, Saint Alexander was sentenced to decimation , but escaped it and hid in Milan . There he was again captured and thrown into prison. He was required to abandon the practice of the Christian faith. In prison, he was visited by Saints Fidelius and Bishop Matern . Fidel organized the flight of St. Alexander, he hid in Como , but was again captured. Brought to Milan, Saint Alexander was sentenced to death by truncating the chapter. But during execution the executioner's hands became numb. Saint Alexander was again thrown into prison, but fled again and ended up in Bergamo, passing Fara Gerra d'Adda and Capriate San Gervasio .

In Bergamo, he was a guest of Mr. Crotacius, who persuaded him to hide from his pursuers. However, instead, Saint Alexander decided to become a priest and turned to the Lord many of the inhabitants of Bergamo, including Firma and Rustica , who were subsequently tormented. Saint Alexander was again captured and beheaded on August 26, 303 on the site now occupied by the Church of Saint Alexander in Colonna (San Alessandro in Colonna).

It is considered the patron saint of the city of Bergamo.

Honor

dedicated to St. Alexander and was built around 585 by the king of the Lombards Avtari [3] . Saint Alexander is one of the saints revered in the church of Saints Bartholomew and Alexander of Bergamo in Rome.
