Story

The action takes place in Germany around 1928. Three companions - Robert Lococ (Robbie), Otto Kester and Gottfried Lenz maintain a small car repair shop. The main character, auto mechanic Robbie, met a charming girl Patricia Holman. Robbie and Pat - people of different fates and from different layers of society - fell in love with each other. The novel shows the development of their love against the backdrop of the crisis of those years.

Problems

The novel continues the theme of the "lost generation" [3] .

People who have passed through the crucible of war cannot escape the ghosts of the past. War memories constantly torment the main character. A hungry childhood was the cause of his favorite illness. But it was the military fraternity that rallied the three comrades: Robert Lococ, Otto Kester, and Gottfried Lenz. And they are ready for anything for the sake of friendship. Despite the death that has saturated him, the novel speaks of the lust for life.
