Life and work
Artist Elias Moskos was born in Crete and is among the five largest Greek icon painters of the 17th century. In connection with the struggle from 1645 to 1669 for the possession of the island between the Venetians and local Greeks, on the one hand, and the Turkish army, on the other, which ended with the victory of the Turks under the main city of Crete Candia (now Heraklion), E. Moskos, like many other Cretan masters, was forced to leave their homeland. He moved to Zakynthos in 1646 , where he lives and works until his death. [one]
All the famous and preserved icons of E. Moskos brush were painted by him between 1649 and 1686 on Zakynthos and the neighboring island of Kefalonia . At the initial stage of his work, the artist's works reflected the traditions of Byzantine iconography (for example, Christ Pantocrator (1653) ), however, in most of his works, a strong influence of Italian mannerism is felt.
