The name of the city is translated from French as “beautiful city”.
The population (according to the 2000 census) is 41,410 people. The total area of the city is 48.8 km².
Belleville was founded in 1814, but received the status of a settlement only in 1819. In 1850, it became a city.
From its very founding, it has become a haven for immigrants from Germany . In the first decades of its existence, about 90% of the city's population were Germans or descendants of immigrants.
