Biography

Gustavo Varela began his career at Nacional in 1998. From 1998 to 2002, three times became the champion of Uruguay.

In mid-2002, immediately after playing in the national team at the World Championships, it was bought by the German Schalke 04. In Germany, Varela played until the end of 2008, having twice become the vice champion of the Bundesliga, the winner of the League Cup, played in the Champions League.

In January 2009, he became a free agent and later joined Nacional, becoming one of the many experienced veterans of Uruguayan football who joined the tri-color squad in the offseason.

Varela played in 24 matches for the Uruguayan national team from 2000 to 2006. Together with Celeste, he became a participant in the final part of the 2002 World Cup, where Uruguayans were unable to leave the group along with other former world champions - France . He also performed at the America's Cup 2004, where the team took third place.

Since the summer of 2011 stands for the Argentine Cerro .
