Gigu began his career at Nacional in 1994. In mid-2000, after winning the second championship with the “three-color”, he moved to the Italian “Roma”, where a year later he became the champion of Italy.

The Italian stage of his career at Gigu also included performances for the teams Siena, Fiorentina and Treviso. After the latter lost the status of a professional club, FIFA decided that the players of this club have no more obligations and can transfer to other teams. Gianni decided to return to his native Nacional. The last match was on May 2, 2010, for a long time was in the status of a free agent, at the moment he completed his career.

Gigu played in 41 matches for the national team of Uruguay for the period from 1999 to 2004. Together with Celeste, he became the vice champion of the America's Cup in 1999, as well as a participant in the final part of the 2002 World Cup, where Uruguayans were unable to leave the group along with other former world champions - France .

The ancestors of Gigou are French, as evidenced by his last name. After moving to Italy, Gianni received a second citizenship - France, so as not to fall under restrictions for non- EU players .
