This Olympics was the most unsuccessful in the history of Austria at the Winter Olympics. After the relatively good 1980 Olympics in Lake Placid (3 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze), the Austrians at the Games in neighboring Yugoslavia became a real failure.

In addition to the bronze of Anton Steiner on the downhill, several more Austrians were close to the awards. Skier Franz Gruber became 4th in giant slalom, Rosvita Steiner became fourth in slalom. Sanokheri Georg Flukkinger and Franz Wilhelmer took 4th place in the doubles races. Several Austrian athletes took fifth and sixth places.
