Character

In the novel, Fitzwilliam Darcy appears as a wealthy gentleman, with an annual income of 10 thousand pounds, and the owner of Pemberley , a large estate in Derbyshire, England . At the first meeting of Darcy with Elizabeth Bennett, he treats her reprehensibly. But, having looked at her better, he tries to look after her, while fighting his still ongoing sense of superiority. Ironically, Darcy himself does not approve when his friend Bingley seriously becomes attached to Elizabeth's elder sister, Jane, and very subtly hints to Bingley that Jane does not feel any response, of which he himself, Darcy, does not have the slightest doubt. Later, he explains this apparent hypocrisy by stating: "I was kinder to him than to myself." And, although he does not realize this, the fact that Elizabeth finds out about his intervention in the budding relationship between Jane and Bingley causes her strong dislike of Darcy.

In the end, Darcy confesses her love to Elizabeth, and makes her an offer. However, expressing his passionate love, he reminds Elizabeth of the great social gap that lies between them. Elizabeth takes offense and vehemently refuses him, expressing her reasons for the antipathy towards him, including the knowledge of his interference with Jane and Bingley, as well as what she heard about Darcy from her friend, Mr. George Wickham, about Darcy's unfair treatment of Wickham. Elizabeth states that the manner in which Darcy proposed to her keeps her from any concern about Darcy’s feelings, and that she “could have felt different feelings for him if he had acted a little more like a gentleman. " Darcy withdraws in anger and that night writes Elizabeth a letter in defense of his wounded honor, in which he reveals the motives for his interference in the relationship of Jane and Bingley and gives a full description of his relationship throughout his life with Wickham, who tried to seduce and secretly take away the younger Darcy's sister, Georgiana, the previous summer.

Although initially enraged by the fervent refusal and sharp criticism of Elizabeth, Darcy is shocked by the discovery of how impressed others are with his behavior, and especially with Elizabeth, however, he acknowledges his need to reassess his actions. A few months later, Darcy unexpectedly meets Elizabeth when she visits his estate in Derbyshire with the Gardiners - her aunts and uncles. At first, Elizabeth was embarrassed by the fact that Darcy found her in Pemberley, because she agreed to go see the estate, being completely sure that he was not there at the moment. However, she is surprised at the dramatic change in Darcy's character. Responding to criticism of Elizabeth, Darcy now intends to show “gentlemanly behavior”, the lack of which she accused him earlier, and he also amazes her to the core with his kindness towards both herself and her relatives.

When it turns out that the younger sister of Elizabeth, Lydia, fell a victim of temptation and fled with Wickham, Darcy hunts them down and forces Wickham to marry Lydia, thus saving Lydia and her family from public shame and censure. Darcy’s intervention was not aimed at capturing Elizabeth — he tried to keep this fact a secret from her — but rather, in order to reduce Elizabeth’s anxiety (the narrator hints that Darcy’s intervention in order to help Elizabeth might cost him his annual income). Darcy also feels partly guilty of not being able to warn the Elizabeth family of the dangers of a close acquaintance with Wickham. Darcy then pushes Bingley to return to Longbourne and encourages him to get Jane's hand, admitting his misconception about her character. Darcy himself again makes an offer to Elizabeth and, this time, she accepts it. The couple reflects on both of their mistakes, and Darcy thanks Elizabeth for pointing out errors in his behavior: “you, I was properly tamed” .

In Meriton, Darcy is captured by a cold and shy person, with a great sense of pride, which is often expressed as arrogance. His detached mannerisms and apparent contempt for all the people around him earn him the contempt of Elizabeth and many others, especially in light of the allegations of charming George Wickham that he had been subjected to unfair treatment by Darcy. But, in the end, it turns out that those first impressions are wrong. And also the fact that Darcy's seemingly arrogant character hides his sincere generosity and honest nature, and that it was Darcy who was subjected to unfair treatment from Wickham, who himself turned out to be false and unworthy of trust. Even Darcy’s interference in Jane’s and Bingley’s relationships was made more well-intentioned and sincerely concerned for her friend than because of malicious intent, although, while reinterpreting her behavior, Darcy admits that his intervention was erroneous and harmful.
