Merrem was the son of a merchant who first devoted himself to the study of languages (Arabic, Latin, Greek). After his admission to the University of Gottingen in 1778, he became a student of Johann Friedrich Blumenbach and began to become interested in zoology in general and ornithology in particular. In this area he was especially distinguished.
