The author is the honored sculptor of Russia Alexander Rukavishnikov . The monument was inaugurated on June 14, 2009 . The opening was timed to the 1150th anniversary of Veliky Novgorod.
It is a half-meter high pedestal, on which 3 steps lead from four sides. In the center of the pedestal is the figure of the composer, leaning on a massive park bench. The entire sculptural composition is made of bronze. The height of the figure is 3.6 meters, the total weight of the monument is more than 3 tons. The sculpture was delivered to Veliky Novgorod on May 28, 2009 by special transport [1] .
Funding was carried out with funds raised by citizens and enterprises of Novgorod, as well as through targeted contributions to the non-profit Fund of the 1150th anniversary of Veliky Novgorod. On September 4, 2009, the speakers were installed on the lampposts of the square where the monument is located. Of these, the music of Sergei Rachmaninov is quietly transmitted. The five-hour sound disc presents all four of his concerts, variations on the themes of Paganini , symphonies, piano sonata number two and other works.
The city territory where the square and the indicated monument are located was historically located in the Zagorodsky end of Novgorod. After the October Revolution of 1917, a sports field of trade unions was organized here [2] . During the Great Patriotic War, the Kremlin Park was significantly damaged by shelling and bombing. In place of the former sports field, the Dynamo city stadium was built with wooden stands. Subsequently, the stadium was abolished and dismantled. The vacated place was planted with trees and included in the park.
