Biography

In 1955, V. G. Lukonin graduated from the Department of Iranian Philology of the Eastern Faculty of Leningrad State University named after A.A. Zhdanova .

Since 1957, he was an employee of the State Hermitage Museum ; since 1964, he was the head of the department of the East. In 1961 he defended his thesis on "Iran in the III-IV centuries. (Addition of the Sasanian state and the formation of an official style in art) ” [1] . In 1972, V. G. Lukonin defended his dissertation for the degree of Doctor of Historical Sciences on the topic “Early Medieval Iran. Some problems of history and culture ” [2] .

V. G. Lukonin has published over 70 works, among them more than 10 books of great importance for domestic and world Iranistics: “Iran in the era of the first Sassanids” [3] , “Culture of the Sassanian Iran” [4] , “The Art of Ancient Iran” [5] , “Iran in the III Century” [6] , “Ancient and Early Medieval Iran” [7] , published in many languages, “Persia” [8] and others. V. G. Lukonin is the author of several chapters in the authoritative “The Cambridge History of Iran . "

V. G. Lukonin was also known abroad, he was a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute , a member of several international congresses, co-author of fundamental collective works on the history and art of the Ancient East; He not only reviewed some seemingly well-established views, but also recreated many pages of Iranian history and culture.

He died suddenly on September 10, 1984 , at the 53rd year of his life. He was buried at the Theological Cemetery in St. Petersburg.
