Biography
He studied first with his father, the organist Heinrich Friedrich Holtermann, then with August Christian Prell and finally in 1847 - 1849 . in Munich by Joseph Menter . In addition, he studied composition under the direction of Ignaz Lahner . In 1850 - 1852 He performed as a soloist, simultaneously performing his first compositions (in 1851 his symphony was performed in Leipzig). In 1852 , Mr .. received the position of bandmaster in Würzburg , and from 1853 until the end of his life he worked as a conductor in the Frankfurt City Theater, in 1874 he took the post of music director.
Of the works of Holterman, the most famous were works for cello - primarily eight concerts, especially the first Op. 14 (the slow part of which, Cantilena, was played separately - in youth, it was recorded by Pablo Casals ) and the easiest fourth. Some of Holtermann’s small plays are still part of the pedagogical repertoire. In addition, Holterman owns a number of arrangements - in particular, he released a collection of plays by Edward Grieg arranged for cello and piano.
