Gosfred was the second son of Count Ampourias and Roussillon Gosbert , however, since his elder brother Sugnier died as a child, after the death of his father in 931, he inherited all of his possessions [1] . His long reign was peaceful, so the main efforts of Gosfred I were aimed at the development and strengthening of the territories under his authority.

About the first years of the reign of Gosfred I nothing is known. The first surviving document, signed by a graph, is dated June 7, 946 [2] . On December 24 of the same year, together with the Archbishop of Narbonne Hermengod [3] , Bishop Elna Guadal [4] and Bishop of Gerona , Gosfred participated in the dedication of the church of San Martin de Botises. In subsequent years, the main activity of the graph was also patronage of churches and monasteries located in his lands [5] . The most important of these events during the reign of Gosfred I was his participation in 978 in the consecration of the large monastery of Sant Pere de Rod, founded with his help, in Ampuryas. In addition to Count Ampourias and Roussillon, many other Catalan lords (including Viscount Roussillon Auric and Viscount Ampuryas Adalbert) and church hierarchs participated in this ceremony. As the patron of the church, Count Gosfred paid special attention to the Eln diocese in his possession and in 967 assisted in the construction of his son Sunija in this department.

Count Gosfred I was one of the few Catalan rulers of the 10th century who maintained constant ties with the royal court of the monarchs of the West-Frankish state . On September 8, 953, King Louis IV Zamorsky , at the request of the count, gave an immune charter to the monastery of Sant Pere de Rod, and on July 9, 981, King Lothar signed two more charters at the request of Gosfred, one in favor of the monastery of Sant Genies de Fontanes, the other in favor of the graph itself. In the last document, the king called Gosfred "our very dear friend" and endowed the title " duke ". Such a titulature was used in royal charters only in relation to the direct vassals of monarchs. This indicates that at that time the count Ampourias and Roussillon was not a vassal of either the count of Toulouse or the count of Barcelona . After suppression of the Carolingian dynasty in 987 and Hugo Capet's accession to the throne, Gosfred I did not recognize him as the legitimate monarch, which was reflected in the charts of this time signed by the graph, the dating of which contains references to the years of Karoling's Karolingian Lorraine [5] .

Catalan counties in the 9th — 12th centuries

Despite these fairly close ties between Gosfred I and the Kings-Carolingians, historians also note the facts relating to the time of the administration of this graph, indicating the increasing isolation of the Spanish counties from the monarchs of the West-Frankish state. Including, Count Gosfred I was the first of the Catalan rulers who began minting his own coins without mentioning the names of the kings that ruled at that time. Also, Gosfred was probably the first of the Counts of the Spanish Mark, who used the title "Count by the grace of God" [5] .

The rule of Gosfred I includes the transfer of the count residence from the village of Ruskino to Castellón de Ampúrias [5] .

In 989, Count Gosfred made a will, according to which, after his death, his possessions were to be divided between his sons. The exact date of the death of the graph is unknown: in the charter of February 28, 991, he is already named dead [1] . It is assumed that Gosfred I died shortly before this date. After his death, in accordance with the will, his eldest son, Hugo I, received the county of Ampourias, and the third son, Gislabert I - the county of Roussillon.

Gosfred I was married (no later than April 20, 959) to Ava Ghisla (died after February 28, 991), possibly the daughter of Count Ruerg Raymund II [1] . The children from this marriage were:

  • Hugo I (died 1040) - Count Ampourias (991-1040)
  • Suniye Ampuryas (died 978) - Bishop Elna (967-978)
  • Gislabert I (died 1013) - Count of Roussillon (991-1013)
  • Ghisla
