Belarusian-German relations

Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Belarus and the Federal Republic of Germany were officially established in 1992 . In the same year, the German Embassy was opened in Minsk . The Embassy of the Republic of Belarus is located in Berlin, the Consulate General in Munich operates.

History

From 2009 until his death in November 2015, the Ambassador of the Republic of Belarus to Germany was Andrei Vladimirovich Giro . Since October 2010, Christoph Weil has been the German Ambassador to the Republic of Belarus.

In 2004-2008, the total volume of foreign trade between the countries more than doubled to 3.6 billion US dollars, making Germany the second largest country outside the CIS in the structure of Belarusian foreign trade [1] . The basis of Belarusian exports is the products of the metallurgical and chemical industries, mechanical engineering, textile, food and forestry industries, and imports are products of mechanical engineering and the chemical industry. The volume of Belarusian imports in 2008 exceeded the volume of exports to Germany by more than three times [1] . Germany is also an important investor for the Belarusian economy [1] .

Countries also actively cooperate in the cultural sphere. In 1993, a branch of the Goethe Institute was opened in Minsk [2] .

On March 5, 2012, there was a negative statement by the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko against the German Foreign Minister, an openly gay man, Guido Westerwelle . The minister called Lukashenko a dictator, to which Lukashenko replied: “It is better to be a dictator than a blue one” [3] .
