It is located in the interfluve of the rivers Sukhariki and Karakova , approximately in their middle course. It is the largest volcano in the area. The absolute height is 1956.2 m (1954 m on modern maps), relative about 1250 m. Geographically, the building has the shape of an oval, elongated in the north-east direction with axes 15 × 10 km, an area of 85 km², the volume of erupted material is about 30 km³.
Akhtang Volcano is a small volcanic massif, at the base of which there is a shallow shield building. The top part ends with a gentle cone . The northern slopes, up to the top, are largely destroyed by punches passing into small trough valleys. Southern and eastern eroded weakly and have a primary volcanic appearance. The top of the volcano is severely destroyed. A small flat area has been preserved, apparently a relic of the crater funnel. The initial outflows of the Akhtang volcano are mainly represented by basalts, the apical part, in which pyroclastic material already has a significant role, is represented by andesite-basalts. The age of the volcano is Upper Quaternary.
On the slopes of the Akhtang volcano and near its foot there is a large number of Holocene slag cones of the areal type, which are characterized by very perfect preservation. The last eruption on one of the cones occurred in 2002.
