History
The University of Pisa was established by decree of Pope Clement VI on September 3, 1343 [1] on the basis of schools existing in Pisa since the 11th century. At the time of foundation, theology , civil law , canon law, and medicine were taught.
In 1403 , after the capture of the city of Florence , the university stopped working. In 1473 , through the efforts of Lorenzo Medici , training was resumed and expanded. Soon, however, new wars and revolts followed; in 1494, the university was evacuated, located in various cities of Italy, and only in 1543 , under Cosimo I , returned to Pisa. In 1545, the Duke of Cosimo approved the university charter.
Towards the end of the sixteenth century, the University of Pisa, with the generous support of the Tuscan Dukes of Medici , is becoming one of the most respected educational institutions in Europe, especially in the field of law and medicine. In 1544, the oldest academic botanical garden in Europe was established at Cosimo I University (which disputes the right of Padua to be called the oldest in the world), an observatory was built, a rich library was assembled, and the number of departments (including mathematics, natural sciences, chemistry, etc.) was increased.
Among the famous university students was a local native Galileo Galilei ; from 1589 to 1592, Galileo was a professor of mathematics at the University of Pisa. Later, from 1610 until the end of his life, Galileo, by decree of the duke, was re-enlisted in this position, but without the obligation to teach.
After the condemnation of Galileo, the Italian school of science fell into decay. Its revival was associated with Napoleonic reforms, and especially with the unification of Italy . In 1839, the First Congress of Italian Scientists was held in Pisa, and the world's first department of agriculture appears at the university. After the unification of Italy, the University of Pisa again becomes the country's foremost and prestigious educational institution.
In the XX century, the number of faculties and departments was significantly increased: economics , linguistics , pharmaceuticals , politics , literature , etc. appeared.
