Benefits of Gustav II Adolf

The privileges of Gustav II Adolf - were signed by the Swedish king Gustav II Adolf for Riga after 1621, when de facto Riga fell under the power of the Swedish kingdom in the framework of the Swedish-Polish war , which began in 1600 and ended with the truce in Altmark in 1629.

On September 25, 1621, all previous Riga rights were summarized and supplemented in paragraph 71, which were formulated by order of the monarch. The most important from the point of view of prospects for successful trade were those who gave a guarantee to the Riga merchants for the exclusive trading with Belarus , Russia and Lithuania . Other important regulations were the privileges of duty-free trade in all Swedish provinces. Two years ago - this was the time of catching runaway peasants throughout the kingdom (later, after the Swedish governor of Livonia, Klas Tott accepted the project of lawyer Hilhen , drawn up back in Polish times, in 1599, this rule worked out to catch peasants who were on the run, increased to 11 years from 1668). According to this document, Lutheranism was declared the dominant religion in Riga.

The city won something under the terms of the privileges - for example, it was decided to expropriate the so-called “ warehouse fields ” in favor of the city chapter , which the chapter had owned since the beginning of the XII century. Also, the city got some territorial acquisitions - the land of Limbazu (then Lemzalsky) old town, as well as the city of Lemzal itself , including some estates and estates on the territory of Swedish Vidzeme . Other important points of royal privilege: nobles lost the right to buy grain in the villages; peasants received the right to independently (without dealers and intermediaries) sell goods in Riga. Another program point, which, however, later had to be neglected (see Lice , Lithuanian duty and Royal Allowance ): a moratorium on the increase in trade duties. Also, according to one of the points of agreement between the city and the king, the city pledged to maintain the Swedish garrison at its own expense (this “disgrace” lasted until 1695, when Yakovlev barracks were built specifically for the needs of the Swedish legionaries outside the elements of the fortress wall) fortified cities.
