Overview
The record label King Records was created in January 1931 , as a division of Japan’s largest publisher, Kodansha , which has been publishing the King magazine since 1924 , on behalf of which it received its name. The first batches of records were produced at Polydor and Telefunken plants. In 1935 , the label signed a partnership agreement on the import of production technology in Tokyo and in 1936 built its own factory. [1] Before World War II , King Records, like other major Japanese record labels - Nippon Columbia Ltd., Japan Victor , Nippon Polydor, Teichiku Entertainment, produced and presented popular and patriotic songs (songs of the war years). The label's logo that arose before the war, in a square “ cartouche ” framed by lightning, shows the “roaring” lion standing on the KING inscription. The logo partially copies the logo of Telefunken Recording, in partnership with which King Records worked. During the war, in the wake of the struggle with " hostile words ", in 1943 the label from King was renamed Fuji - Fuji Onban ( Japanese 富士 音 盤 Fuji onban , Fuji records ) , and the lion was replaced with the image of Fuji . After the end of World War II, the old name and emblem were returned. In November 1951, a joint stock company was founded under the name King Record Company Limited - becoming independent, but remaining a member of the publishing Otowa Group . The largest shareholders of steel, Kodansha Ltd. and Tokyo Broadcasting System, Inc. (TBS).
King Records is also known as the “strong” record label of the Enck genre. When in the late 1990s, due to a partial loss of interest in the genre, many Enk artists had problems, as a result of market restructuring , the company took some of them to itself. Recently, as a result of the recession in the music industry , there has been a decline in sales and the company is betting on such J-pop artists as Nana Mizuki and AKB48 . According to the results of the first half of 2012, King Records was the 5th producer of music in terms of physical sales (singles, albums, music DVD / Blu-ray) in Japan [2] .
