Retreat of South Korean and American Forces to Busan

The Republic of Korea was established in Seoul on August 15, 1948 , and the People’s Democratic Republic of Korea on September 9 of the same year in Pyongyang . The withdrawal of Soviet and American troops from both Koreas created the conditions for the outbreak of the Korean War of 1950-1953. .

On June 25, 1950, the DPRK forces launched a general offensive, and three days later seized the capital of South Korea Seoul and continued to press the army of the Republic of Korea to the south. Since June 27, the U.S. military has come out in defense of the southerners, launching an air operation along with planning for a ground operation. On July 1, units of the 24th Infantry Division of the US Army arrived in Busan , which already on July 4 entered the battle with the Korean People’s Army , but suffered a number of defeats. On July 20, the commander of the American troops, Major General Dean, was captured by the KPA, and the remnants of the American and South Korean armies retreated to the southeast of the Korean Peninsula [2] .

Busan Perimeter Defense

By August 1, the forces of South Korea and the United States retreated to Busan [3] . The rest of the controlled territory, which amounted to no more than 10% of the former territory of the Republic of Korea, was called the Busan Perimeter. From late July to September 1950, American and South Korean troops fought defensive battles for the right to preserve the last territory on the peninsula. The defenders managed to maintain a foothold, which saved the entire result of the Korean War for the southerners and saved them from complete defeat and destruction [2] .

The threat to the Busan perimeter was eliminated after the Incheon landing operation of the US armed forces, which began on September 15, 1950 . On September 23, Seoul was recaptured by the Americans and Southerners and surrounded by the KPA group in southern Korea, a significant part of which died or was captured [3] .

Front Stabilization

The offensive by the Americans and Southerners ended in the capture of Pyongyang and the intervention of Korean forces in Korea, which entered the territory of North Korea and contributed to another turning point in the war. On December 5, the North Koreans, with the help of the Chinese, returned Pyongyang again [2] .

By mid-January 1951, the first signs of equilibrium appeared at the front, and in May it finally stabilized.
