Story
The action takes place in the world of the alternative present, whose history has diverged from the real since about the 1980s. Directly shown events occur at the beginning of the XXI century. The world of the film is markedly different from the real one - the Soviet Union continues to exist in it - a militarized socialist empire, with a party and actively working against other KGB states. Japan has a practically modern look, China is divided into northern and southern by two warring factions, between which the war is constantly ready to break out again. There are a large number of terrorist groups that hunt for military technology and weapons of mass destruction. The KGB of the USSR also uses terrorists for its own purposes.
In combat, armored armored vehicles (AS) are used - human - like robots operated by a human pilot. The technologies used in the latest military developments (the so-called “black technologies”) were obtained by mankind from a select few - “wispards” (English “whispered” - “those whom we whispered”) - in whose memory they are present from the very beginning . The chosen ones themselves, as a rule, are not aware of what they carry in themselves. The chosen one is being hunted - the terrorists and the KGB are trying to capture them.
The world non-governmental organization Mithril is fighting against terrorism and, in addition, it tries to protect the carriers of “black technologies” whenever possible, preventing them from falling into the hands of terrorists. Mifril itself is actively using "black technology" - it has the AU, superior Soviet and American developments, its combat vehicles and transports are equipped with a system of invisibility. One of the combat units of the Mithril is the submarine Tuaha de Danann (Irish. The Tribes (People) of Goddess Danu ), under the command of Captain Theresa Testarossa, a sixteen-year-old girl, one of the elect, who herself designed this ship and directed its construction .
The main characters of the series are schoolgirl Tidori Kaname, one of the chosen ones, and her age mate, sergeant of “Mithril” Sagara Sosuke, who was staged in the same class as Kaname for security to prevent the girl from being captured by terrorists or the KGB.
Novels
There are 12 main novels (short stories). Their character is constantly changing from book to book, becoming more dramatic and "adult." No novelties have been licensed in the CIS countries, but there are amateur translations that are widespread on the net.
Characters
Sagara Sosuke ( jap. 相 良 宗 介 ) is a seventeen-year-old youth, a soldier of the Mithril. Of medium height, thin, with black, poorly trimmed, disheveled hair, on the left cheek - a cruciform scar. Despite his young age, Sagara is a fully trained professional soldier with a huge real combat experience. From the age of eight, he fought on the side of the rebels of Helmagistan (a conditional Central Asian state with a Muslim population, like Afghanistan, in Afghanistan, is mentioned in light novels instead of Afghanistan). He was raised as a son by one of the rebel leaders first, then by Major Kalinin from Mithril. The real name is unknown, the previous adoptive father called him Kashim (Kasim), the current name, at his request, gave Kalinin - this is the name of one of the major's military friends, who has no relation to the name or origin of Sagara himself. (According to the instructions in the story: “Voice from the North”, it can be assumed that Sagara Sosuke is a real name.) I visited many “hot spots” all over the world. His whole life was spent in war and in training in war, he brilliantly wields weapons, military equipment, is trained in hand-to-hand combat, skillfully manages the AU. The current duty station is the AU special task force of the Tuifa De Danann (TDD-1) subdivision of the Mithril organization. Title - Sergeant. The immediate superior is Senior Sergeant Melissa Mao. It is extremely poorly oriented in a peaceful life, does not imagine the relations of ordinary, “peaceful” peers, does not have any experience of romantic relationships with girls. Even instead of “yes,” he usually says “is” or “so sure.” He loves Japanese cuisine, does not drink alcohol at all, is convinced that "alcohol destroys nerve cells." In her free time she likes fishing, she only reads literature on military topics. Being in the role of a schoolboy, Sagara, from the very beginning, behaved strangely, from the point of view of classmates, he was considered to be an “army fanatic,” the benefit of which was already a class A fanatic - Shinji. It is not easy to learn Sagar, his main "enemies" - "Kobun" (literature) and the history of Japan. Over time, Sagara becomes attached to Tidori Kaname, she is not indifferent to her attitude, but there is not much time left for romance - one constantly has to either experience the character of a girl, or save her life, or go somewhere to fight. In general, Sagara, due to its military "impenetrability", is the only one who is able to build close relations with Tidori. Piloting the AS-M9 Standard Construction to the abduction situation of Chidori and her classmates. Pilots: AC-M9 Equipped with ECS and Lambda engine, code-named: “ARX-7” or “Arbaliest”. Piloting: RK-91 In the 8th volume of the light-novel “Fiery spirit of a loner”. Piloting: ARX-8 “Laevatane” since the end of the 9th volume of the light-narrative “The Day When You Come”. Call sign "Urtts-7".
- Saiyu : Tomokazu Seki
Tidori Kaname ( Jap. 千 鳥 か な め ) - the name translates as "ball lightning." A pretty sixteen year old high school student of Jindai High School, the last year of her studies. Smart, respected in class, vice president of the School Consilium. The character is extremely hot-tempered, it can easily hit the one who has tucked under the arm or run into it with something heavy. The leader, easy to command, organize the class, seeking submission. At the same time, he is easily embarrassed, embarrassed to show his feelings, hiding them behind unnatural laughter and aggression. He studies successfully, in exact sciences - on abilities, in humanitarian studies - at the expense of constant persistent classes. "Weak" subject: geography (believes that Geneva is the capital of Brazil). Perfectly physically developed, a member of the school softball club ( baseball option), an excellent player. She likes cooking, especially Japanese cuisine. In the morning she has low blood pressure . Wakes up with difficulty. She lives alone - her mother died 3 years ago from cancer. There is no information about the father (according to the book, the chairman of the UN Environmental Protection Council). There is a grandfather of Komur Shujiro, a former senior lieutenant of the imperial navy, abandoned his daughter when she ran off with her father Tidori. Kaname is very popular, but she doesn't have a boyfriend - the guys at school fear her because of her character. Sagara at first attracted Kanu with her singularity, but having learned him closer and having gone through several deadly adventures with him, Kaname falls in love with Sagara; while it does not change its usual manner of treatment, but begins to understand the oddities of the guy.
- Sayyu: Satsuki Yukino
Teresa Testarossa ( テ レ サ ・ テ テ ス ロ ッ サ ) - (Tessa): The captain and pride of the organization "Mithril", the captain of the submarine "Tuaha de Danann . " A fragile sixteen-year-old girl with ashy hair and large gray eyes. In many ways, it looks like the opposite of Kaname - weak, not at all athletic, very awkward, constantly stumbles and falls on level ground. But, like Kaname, she is very capable of exact sciences. She was born on the American East Coast, traveled around the world with her family. She has an older brother Leonard; relations with him are not maintained, Tessa does not like to talk about his brother, but he respects him very much for his intellectual abilities. : Also, like Kaname and Leonard, Tessa is “Chosen,” she showed her talent as a child, which allowed her to be in Mithril. As an organizer and leader, she is perfectly prepared and very capable, as a submarine commander in a combat situation - simply indispensable, because the ship feels the best, knows and knows how to use all its capabilities. Nevertheless, experienced officers Andrei Kalinin and Richard Mardukas are still looking after her. : Tessa knows his value well and is proud of his abilities and achievements. Her peculiarity and weakness is “the complex of an excellent student”: a girl categorically cannot admit that she cannot or cannot do something, with one assumption that she is unable to do anything, she goes out of her mind and is ready to overcome any difficulties in order to prove the opposite. Her attitude to Sagar is unremarkable until she finds herself in a dangerous situation. After the successful resolution of which Tessa declares that "it looks like I fell in love with him."
Melissa Mao ( Jap. メ リ ッ サ ・ マ オ ) is a young woman of medium height, an American with Chinese roots, with a well-developed body, black, shortly cropped hair and brown eyes. Senior Sergeant "Mithril", an experienced soldier. He owns all types of weapons, hand-to-hand combat, pilots the AU. Smokes, drinks beer, although usually does not go beyond. Outside the service, she plays the role of Tessa's older friend, knows everything about the captain, treats her somewhat patronizingly. In this case, a little jealous of the mind and abilities of Tessa, as well as her teenage confidence in the ability to change the world. Age - 25 years. Call sign "Urtts-2". Title - Senior Sergeant (Prior to the events of the 7th volume of the light-story “Relying only on myself”). Piloting: AS-M9.
- Sayyu: Michiko Ney
Kurtz Weber ( Jap. ク ル ツ ・ ウ ェ ー バ ー ) is a thin, blue-eyed blond German above average height with long hair. Two years older than Sagara. A soldier with rich combat experience, Sergeant Mithril, AS pilot. Gorgeous sniper, prefers to fight at long range, in hand-to-hand and with melee weapons is not so strong. A handsome and a womanizer, confident in his irresistible, with girls behaves somewhat cheekily, with which they are not always satisfied. Loves to have fun, can make not quite a correct joke. With Sagara keeps a bit down, Mao calls the "little sister", constantly trying to flirt with her, for which he often receives an army shoe in physiognomy. Age - 19 years. Call sign "Urtts-6". Title - Sergeant (Prior to the events of the 7th volume of the light-story “Relying only on myself”). Piloting: AS-M9.
- Sayyu: Shin-ichiro Miki
Gauron ( Jap. ガ ウ ロ ン (nickname; name unknown) ) - he may be Chinese (but in the first volume denies his Chinese origin), his name or nickname "Gauron" in Chinese means "nine dragons". According to his own recollections, he was one of the children used by Paul Pol in the Kampuchea war in the second half of the 1970s. A professional mercenary, a terrorist, being responsible for at least thirty high-profile murders and two bombings of airplanes, remained elusive for the special services. When he was a volunteer, for some whim, he warmed orphaned twins (in the stories they were two young men, in the anime they were two girls), whom he taught, fed and raised as ideal killers, loyal only to him personally. While working as an instructor in a mercenary camp in Afghanistan (Helmazhistan by the anime version), he met a twelve-year-old Sagar (who at the time bore the name Kashim and fought on the side of the rebels). Gauron saw himself as a child in Kashima, was delighted and realized that if he was ready to die, it was only from the hand of this boy. He called Kashima to himself so that he too became a mercenary, but Kashim refused. Later, Gauron participated in the destruction of the detachment, where Kashim fought. The surviving Kashim together with the major Kalinin who sheltered him tried to kill Gauron: Kashim shot him with a rifle, hit his head and was sure that he had killed, but as it turned out, a titanium plate was implanted into Gauron's skull after being wounded in one of the early "cases" so he survived. He worked for the KGB of the USSR in getting “black technologies”, it was in connection with this work that he first met Kaname and again with Sagara, who had already become a soldier of “Mithril”. Character: sadistic cold-blooded. Revived only upon contact with Sagara. Piloting: AS- "Kodarl" ("Venom" according to the classification of "Mithril").
- Sayu: Masahiko Tanaka
Belfangan Crusoe - a tall black man with brown eyes, preaches Islam. Previously, he served in the Mediterranean division of Mithril, but after the death of Lieutenant McAlene, he was transferred under the direction of Theresa Testarossa. He took the place of the deceased lieutenant (McAlen and Crusoe previously served together and were good friends) and to test their subordinates from the Special Purpose Group, he conducted an authorized fight in the army with Sagara, in which he showed himself to be an excellent and experienced fighter, able to use the full combat potential of the machine. Call sign "Uruz-1". Title - Senior Lieutenant. Pilots: AC-M9 model D "Falke".
Lord Mallory is the head of Mithril and Amalgam. Real name unknown. Date of birth unknown. Has a son
Andrei Sergeevich Kalinin - Major (Captain-Lieutenant) of "Mithril", serves on the "Tuaha de Danann" Tessa's subordinate and commander of Sagara, Weber, Mao (possibly others). Old experienced military, a former fighter of the GRU special forces, cold, calm, impenetrable and balanced, surviving even in extreme conditions. It is rumored that he is difficult to kill. He was captured by the Amalgam terrorists. He knows Sagar much longer than the others, since they fought with him in Helmajistan. Marital status - widower, wife Irina was a violinist. Guardian of Sagara. Pronounced Russian. After the events of the 7th volume enters the Amalgam.
- Sayyu: Akio Otsuka
Anime
The events of the films develop over three seasons. The first and third create and maintain the storyline, and the second (Full Metal Panic: Fumoffu) has a self-parity character and is mainly devoted to the adaptation of Sagara in a peaceful life.
Steel alarm!
The three Mithril fighters - Senior Sergeant Melissa Mao, Sergeant Kurtz Weber and Sergeant Sagare Sosuke are ordered to guard one of the elect - schoolgirl Kaname Tidori. Sagara is introduced to the school under the guise of a student to protect the girl directly, and Mao and Weber provide support. The work of Sagara turns out to be difficult: he must be constantly on the alert, while he cannot be revealed to a girl who is unaware of her abilities and the danger threatening her. The problems are also created by the fact that Sagara, from childhood, who knew only war and never studied in a regular school, does not know how to behave properly in such an environment. He constantly commits inappropriate actions and incurs the wrath of teachers, classmates and Kaname herself. Only in critical situations Sagara can prove itself, and here he, as a rule, turns out to be on top.
In the DVD edition of the 24 series. They can be divided into six "missions" of three or four series in each:
- "Mithril" takes Kaname under protection (series 1 to 3) - the appearance of Sagara at school, familiarity with classmates and "peaceful" life.
- Rescuing Hostages in the State of Khanka (Series 4 through 7) —Gauron, hunting for Kaname, is captured by an airplane in which the Sagara class leaves for Okinawa, Sagara is forced to save classmates.
- Terrorists are trying to destroy Tokyo (series 9 to 12).
- “The wind walking through my homeland” (series 15 to 17) - Sagar is attached as an expert to the group that must repel a nuclear warhead captured by terrorists in his native Helmajistan.
- Gauron attacks the American base (series 18 to 20).
- The battle for “de Danan” (series 21-24) - captive Gauron, with the help of the bribed militants of “Mithril”, is released and seizes the ship. Tessa, Kaname, Sagara, Weber and Mao must stop him.
In addition, between missions there are “single” series, giving a more complete description of the characters of the heroes and / or revealing their past.
Steel alarm? Fumoff
The second season of the series (as well as the subsequent ones) was released by another company, created by another director. By the nature of "Fumoff" is very different from the first season. The entire “combat” component relating to the work of “Mithril”, the fight against terrorists and the KGB (their place was taken by local criminal groups) was completely excluded from the plot. All the time is given to the “school” theme: showing in a comedic light the teaching of Sagara Sosuke at school, his addiction to the realities of peaceful life, simultaneously with the adaptation of schoolchildren, primarily Tidori Kaname, to coexistence with such an unusual classmate. Similar series were present in the first season, the second consists of them completely. In two episodes, Tessa appears in the plot, but not in the role of captain and unit commander that was usual for the first season, but as a schoolgirl and an ordinary girl in love. An interesting point: on the credits of the first series, one of the teachers swears at the Jindai school about Sagara - the student constantly damages the school. From what has been said it is clear that the director received a decent bribe for teaching Sagara, whose childhood childhood is known to the authorities of the school, and loyal to his oddities. This explains the strange complacency of the school leadership in relation to the restless student - another would have been ousted for such antics long ago.
Steel alarm! New task
Despite the fact that “New assignment” was released by the same company as the comedy “Fumoff”, the spirit of the series returned to the original one and even became even more gloomy. The war is cruel and naturalistic. The plot revolves around the combat robots again. Erotic and bloody scenes that were present at the very end of the first season, now appear in many series.
Mithril still counteracts terrorism and extremism, helps to extinguish local conflicts. Tidori Kaname, it would seem, does not threaten anything, and the command withdraws Sagara from her protection for the sake of Arbalestos tests. The main tragedy is the instability of the work of the lambda drive, the main weapon of the Mithril. Heroes are in a desperate situation.
Mithril has a worthy rival: the Amalgam organization, one of the leaders of which is, as it turns out, Leonard Testarossa - Tessa's brother. This part of the series reveals in more detail the past of Sagara, Tessa and Melissa Mao. Several episodes show Tessa’s work activities, her relationship with the Mithril command. Of the new characters that appear, a couple of militant sisters Xia Yu Fan and Xia Yu Lan are interesting - girls of the same age as Sagara, brought up as perfect professional killers, absolutely loyal to the teacher. They and Sagara personify two different versions of destiny, two possibilities: the “children of war”, starting with the same, become very different. Sagara, who found Kalinin, grew up a normal person, though not without oddities; the sisters, being pupils of Gauron, did not save anything human, except, perhaps, love for each other.
Schooling is coming to an end. Sagara first wonders: what will he do next? How does he want to see his future?
Steel alarm! New OVA Assignment
A single film describes one of Tereza Testarassa’s unusual days at the Tu’ah de Danan base.
