The early years
Temple was born in the Stowe House family estate in Buckinghamshire , England , in the family of Richard Temple, 3rd Baronet Temple (c. 1634 - May 1697 ) and Mary Knapp (d. 1726 ). He was the 6th child in a family of 7 and 4 son. He attended Eton College and Cambridge University . He entered the military service, at the age of 21 he inherited the title of baronet after the death of his father.
Military career
By the age of 26, Temple was already a lieutenant colonel , at 34 he became lieutenant general , distinguished himself in many battles and sieges under the leadership of the Duke of Marlborough during the War of the Spanish Succession ; especially manifested itself in the siege of Lille ( August 12 - September 10, 1708 ).
Post-war activities
He married Anne Halsey (d. March 20, 1760 ). After accession to the throne of George I , on October 19, 1714 , Temple became 1st Baron Cobham in Kent , later May 23, 1718 - 1st Viscount Cobham and Baron Cobham (with special mention of his sisters Hester and Christine).
In 1719 , during the Fourth Alliance War ( 1718 - 1720 ), he headed an expeditionary force of 4,000 people, having raided the coast of Spain , as a result of which he seized the port of Vigo and held it for 10 days until it received orders to retreat.
