By 1979, AC / DC had already released several studio albums and had frequent and debilitating tours to support them. The reason for the name of the song (and for it the whole album) was an interview in which the journalist asked the group about their tour life. Guitarist Angus Young described it as the “road to hell" ( Eng. Highway to hell ). On the cover of the album, A. Young is depicted with horns and the tail of the devil, which together with the name gave rise to rumors about the group's Satanic inclinations. The group denied these rumors.
The song was co-written by the brothers Angus and Malcolm Young and vocalist Bon Scott . Malcolm Young invented the main guitar riff, which became one of the most recognizable in rock music.
