The party arose in 1989 at the height of the "velvet revolution" in Czechoslovakia . The Slovak People's Party was announced to Glinkov as their ideological predecessors of the SNP. In the parliamentary elections in June 1990, the party received 13.94% of the vote and 22 of the 150 seats in the Slovak National Council, and also received representation at the pan-Czech level in the House of Nationalities (11.44% of the votes from Slovakia and 9 seats out of 75) and People’s chamber (10.96% of the vote is from Slovakia and 6 out of 200 seats). In 1992, the SOR slightly decreased its representation in the legislative bodies (7.93% and 15; 9.35% and 9; 9.93% and 6, respectively). In 1992-1998, with a short break in 1994, the SPS supported Prime Minister Vladimir Meciar .

In the 2002 parliamentary elections, the SOR failed to overcome the five percent barrier, and in 2004 failed to hold its own candidates in the European Parliament elections . However, already in the 2006 elections, the SOR achieved significant success, receiving 11.73% of the vote and 20 seats in parliament. In addition, after the election, the SOR entered into a coalition with the center-left party Kurs - Social Democracy and the Movement for Democratic Slovakia .

From 2006 to 2010, the party had 18 seats in the People’s Council of Slovakia [1] , and also had three ministerial portfolios - education, ecology and regional development. In the European Parliament following the 2009 election, the party had one deputy (he was Yaroslav Pashka). In the 2010 parliamentary elections, the party barely overcame the five percent barrier, receiving 128,490 (5.07%) votes and 9 seats. In the 2012 parliamentary elections, the party received 4.55% of the vote and 0 seats in parliament.

The leader of the party in 1994-1999 and 2003-2012 was Jan Slota . The Slovak television channel Markíza cited Slots’s criminal record, which led to a lawsuit where the party leader admitted his involvement in a number of offenses and even claimed to be proud of having beaten an ethnic Hungarian. The party is known for its xenophobic, anti-Hungarian and anti-Gypsy appearances, as well as the campaign for the rehabilitation of pro-fascist President Josef Tiso .

In October 2012, Andrei Danko was elected chairman of the party.
