Underwater archeology

Underwater archeology is an auxiliary discipline of archeology engaged in the study of artifacts under water. It dates back to the beginning of the 20th century , when Greek fishermen discovered the crash site of an ancient ship carrying statues.

History

Since the second quarter of the 20th century, underwater archeology has acquired the status of science. After the invention of J.-I. Cousteau scuba exploration of human heritage under water has become more accessible and popular.

In the USSR, pioneers were professors R. A. Orbeli [1] , K. E. Grinevich [2] , V. D. Blavatsky [3] , G. A. Koshelenko [4] . Among foreign researchers, Honor Frost , one of the very few women who were engaged in underwater archeology, can be noted.

At present, Russia has about two dozen official underwater archaeological expeditions under the general patronage of the Institute of Archeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences , as well as a number of methodological centers: Confederation of Underwater Activities of Russia [5] ; Moscow Underwater Archaeological Club [6] ; Center for Underwater Research of the Tula State Pedagogical University named after L. N. Tolstoy . Since 2006 , under the auspices of the Communist Party of the Democratic Republic of the Congregation Leo Tolstoy is implementing a children's program on underwater archeology "Show your child the underwater world." Since 2010, in Moscow , under the leadership of Alexander Berezin, the annual almanac "Issues of Underwater Archeology" has been published [7] .

In Ukraine, the leading scientific institution in the field of underwater archeology is the Department of Underwater Heritage of the Institute of Archeology of the NAS of Ukraine .
