Description
Small termites: 4-5 mm (one of the smallest in the unit). Antennae from 13-14 segments. Nests are built in the ground. The species Serritermes serrifer inhabits the walls of termite mounds of the genus Cornitermes ( Termitidae ). In general, these termites are very similar to members of the Rhinotermitidae family.
Classification
Family status has long been disputed. First, Holmgren (1911) [3] placed the species Serritermes serrifer as the only species of the subfamily Serritermitinae then in the family Rhinotermitidae , then Ahamad (1950) [4] placed it in the Termitidae . And only in 1965 the genus was isolated (Emerson, 1965) in a separate family, but for one species, Serritermes serrifer . The genus Glossotermes was also previously assigned to another group of termites ( Psammotermitinae , Rhinotermitidae ).
- Genus Serritermes Wasmann, 1897 [5]
- Serritermes serrifer Holmgren, 1911 - known from the states of Minas Gerais and Mato Grosso in Brazil
- Genus Glossotermes - two species known only from the Amazon region in Brazil
- Glossotermes oculatus Emerson, 1950 [6]
- Glossotermes sulcatus Cancello & De Souza, 2004 [7]
