Gods of Death (Death Note)

A race of supernatural beings that inhabit a separate dimension of the kingdom of the death gods. They have no responsibilities, they only need to kill people for their own survival. ^[1] . But the death gods are not responsible for every death that happens in the world, all people will ultimately die regardless of whether the Shinigami pay attention to them, but the deities can end the life of a person ahead of the allotted time, taking the rest of his life to himself. ^[2]

Appearance

The gods of death vary widely in appearance, from very human to completely inhuman. The bodies of many death gods are impossible by earthly standards. For example, some shinigami have skulls or other bones instead of body parts. Although some shinigami do not have limbs that can hold objects (for example, arms, legs, etc.), all shinigami can hold writing objects and write in death notebooks in some unknown way.

All Shinigami are able to fly and use wings as a means of transportation, especially when traveling in the human world. When their wings are not used, they are retracted.

Physiology

Although the gods of death are supernatural beings, according to Ram, they evolve. Their digestive organs atrophied, and the excretory system also disappeared.

Despite the absence of the necessary internal organs for this, the gods of death can eat food. For example, Ryuk is very fond of apples, and soon he became physically dependent on them, and even “ broke ” (Ryuk claimed that without apples he literally turns him upside down) ^[3] . Also, love to certain foods arose among other gods who had visited the human world ^[4] - Sido loved chocolate , Meadra - bananas, Armagh - grapes.

Since the gods of death are immortal (although sometimes, although very rarely, they still die), the world of death would overflow if the gods could multiply, therefore it is forbidden by the rules, but also impossible physically, because their reproductive system also disappeared in the course of evolution.

Their nervous system , apparently, has also changed, since sleep is not vital. But the possibility of sleep is still preserved, and since many gods are very lazy, they often sleep.

Intelligence and Personality

Each shinigami has a unique personality and level of intelligence. But most death gods are stupid and lazy, some even died because they forgot to write the names of people in the death notebook.

Each shinigami has its own written language, which they use to write in their death notebooks. As Takeshi Obata, a manga artist, suggested, all Shinigami can understand each other's languages. Apparently all Shinigami can also speak earthly languages, and some can certainly read and write in earthly languages.

Origin

The manga and anime do not say anything about the origin of the gods of death. Due to the rule of the notebook that their owners will not go to heaven or hell, and due to the fact that the Shinigami appears in OVA “Death Note: Relight”, which has several external and behavioral similarities with Light, it is popular among fans the theory that the Shinigami is the rebirth of people who used the death note. ^{[5] [6] [7] [4] [8]}

Strengths and abilities

Death Note

Each god of death has a supernatural object that gives the gods their special power - the Death Note. They are issued by the King of the World of the Gods of Death, one for each god, but the King can be deceived or bribed ^[9] and get several notebooks, and you can also find and pick up a notebook for the deceased god ^[10] .

Notebooks are needed by the gods to extend the terms of their lives, because it is worth killing a person by writing his name in a notebook, as the rest of his life will go to the god who killed him ^{[11] [2]} . But many death gods are lazy and rarely write the names of people, some shinigami even died from the end of their life periods, without using the notebook for a long time ^{[12] [4]} .

The rules for using Death Note are very complicated and there are a lot of them (132 of them were published periodically throughout 108 chapters of 12 volumes of manga and 70 during 37 episodes of anime). In the world of death, there are several guidelines for using Notebooks, but most gods are too lazy to read them. But almost everyone knows the main five rules, it was them that Ryuk wrote in the notebook he dropped ^[4] .

• The person whose name will be written in the Notebook will die.
• The Notebook effect will not work if the person writing the name does not know what the face of the one who is supposed to die looks like. Thus, people with the same first and last names do not die.
• If the cause of death is not indicated, the person will die in 40 seconds from a heart attack .
• If the cause of death is written within 40 seconds after the name, then it will happen.
• After writing the circumstances of death, the details of death should be recorded in the next 6 minutes 40 seconds.

If a death note enters the world of people and a person finds it, then the shinigami will be forced to follow the one who found the Notebook until the person dies or abandons the Notebook ^[2] , and obey the many rules governing this situation. For example, the God of death will have to erase the memory of a person if he abandons the Notebook.

Eyes of the God of Death

The eyes of the god of death - the ability of the gods of death, looking at a person, to see his name and the duration of his life. A person who owns a notebook can at any time change his eyes to the eyes of the god of death, while reducing the remaining life span by half ^{[11] [13] [2] [14]} .

In the anime, when a person uses his eyes, the whole world for him appears in red. In the manga, at such moments, the image becomes negative, but the manga for the most part is black and white and therefore, it is possible that in this way the mangaki made it clear that the person’s vision with the eyes of the death god becomes different, but not necessarily with negative colors. The life expectancy that a person sees is always written in Arabic numerals in calculating the world of the death gods, however, only the death gods know how to translate these numbers into human time. The gods of death do not tell people how much they have left to live. The owner of the eyes of death cannot see the life expectancy of a person who owns a notebook, as well as the duration of his own life. The name of the person is visible in any case.

Other abilities

• Immortal, while writing down the names of people in their Death Note, taking away the rest of their lives. ^[2]
• The death god cannot be killed by writing his name in the Notebook. ^[2]

Actively involved in the story

Notebooks of these gods fell into the world of people, giving the opportunity to several people, known under the common nickname " Cyrus ", to kill people for their own purposes.

Ryuk

God of death, who was very bored in his world, and for the sake of entertainment, he threw a notebook with a "user manual" into the human world ^{[17] [17]} . As it later turns out, this was not his notebook ^[15] , but the notebook of another god of death - Sido. Ryuk never felt any special feelings for Light, he did not want to help or interfere with him, but he watches with interest his actions ^[1] . He loves apples, ^[4] and for the sake of eating them, he sometimes even listened to Light (for example, he found all the cameras installed by L, informed Light that he was being watched by Ray Penber, and wrote fake rules in a notebook). He loves apples and games, does not like boredom.

Ram

The god of death who watched as Gelous sacrificed himself to save Misa. I decided to give the girl the notebook of the deceased Shinigami and help her. She quickly becomes attached to Misa and is ready to give her life for her. After Misa began to help Light, Ram made an alliance with Light to kill L, who threatened both Light and Misa. As a result of Light's complicated plan, Misa was compromised and Ram was forced to kill L in order to save her ^[15] , which went against the nature of the Shinigami, who should not save lives, as a result, Ram died. ^[sixteen]

She did not like Light and his methods, but for the sake of Misa's happiness, she helped him. She was ready to kill Light if he did mischief to Misa, even if she herself had to die. Ram does not like human cruelty, she considers people disgusting creatures, in contrast to Ryuk, who finds people funny ^{[18] [16]} .

Death Note: How to Read says that Ram has difficulty writing Japanese.

Obata said that Ram is his favorite god of death, as she is a Shinigami and a "good man." ^[19] Obata says he decided to create an image that contrasts with Ryuk’s image using a white body with rounded lines. ^[16] He used fashion collections to create this motif. He described her appearance as if she was wearing a "very strange costume." Obata stated that Medusa Gorgon inspired him to design a Ram head ^{[20] [16]} .

Sido

The god of death, whose notebook Ryuk threw into the human world. Pretty stupid and because of his stupidity he lost the notebook ^[17] . In the film “Death Note: Light Up the NEW World,” Sido does not appear in person, but the novelization reveals that it was he who handed over the Death Note to Alexei Ivanov. Tsugumi Oba said he used Shido as another Death God appearing in the human world because he liked Shido's appearance. Both reported that Delil Guilors was another candidate for this role, but Oba wanted to create a miserable character. ^[23]

Obata said that when he learned that another God of Death would appear on Earth, he began to develop images of Sido and Delil. He believed that Guilors would be chosen, and prepared for this decision, but Both chose Sido instead. Obata stated that he based the design of Shido's mouth on the beak of the canaries, and the artist described his folding arms as insect-like ^[22] .

The AnimeNewsNetwork reviewer writes that due to the fact that Mallo ruled the death god Sido, several comic moments appeared in the plot, especially if you recall how Light seriously manipulated Ram to achieve his goals. In the same review, the author criticizes the English voice acting of the character, calling one of the worst in the series and describing that Samuel Vincent breaks down into a miserable cry. ^[24] .

Jelous

The official Russian translation of the manga is “Gelos”.

Shinigami, appearing only in flashbacks - in Rem's memories. It was his notebook that went to Misa. Thanks to the story of Gelous, a way of killing the god of death becomes known. He fell in love with Misa, who was supposed to die at the hands of a crazy pursuer. ^[5] Gelous saved her, thereby the Shinigami law - not to prolong the lives of people, as a result of which he immediately died, scattering to dust ^[18] .

Obata stated that Gelous was supposed to be “very beautiful” shinigami in the sketches, but then decided not to use the original concept. Obata designed the patchwork character to show that Gelous is "really a miserable character." Obata added another feature to Gelous: he had difficulty writing names in the Death Note. Obata said that it seemed to him that readers would be able to relate to the character with great sympathy if he looked miserable rather than beautiful ^[22] .

Obata said he first drew detailed patterns on the Death Note of Gelous. But it seemed to him that such an option looked too pretty, and he covered the notebook in black, leaving some parts white. The text on the notebook is written in the language of the death gods ^[25] . The inscription test is referred to the abbreviation ARVC-5 (Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy 5), one of the types of Arrhythmogenic right ventricular vertical cardiopathy , a genetic disease that causes sudden heart attacks.

Meadra

This Shinigami only appears in Post Series - One Shot, the official sequel to the manga. She looks like a thick salamander, and one of the few shinigami without any accessories. Meadra loves bananas, like Ryuk apples ^[4] . She traded herself another notebook for thirteen apples from the King of Death. Arma

The God of Death, which appeared in the mini-series Death Note: The New Generation and in the film Death Note: The Light of the New World . She brought in one of the six Death Notebooks in the human world. Her notebook went to Ryuzaki, the true heir of L. Sacrifices himself to save Ryuzaki. ^[27] In addition to the film, she also appeared in the video “Fighter” by singer Nami Amuro. ^[28]

Like many shinigami it has its own gastronomic passion - in Armagh it is a grape.

Armagh has white skin, and her torso is similar to an exoskeleton of an insect ^[5] , something like butterfly wings covers her shoulders, and her head resembles the head of a moth. Only the right bright blue eye, small nose, black lips, which hide sharp teeth, stand out on the face. She has very long arms with four fingers on each. ^[29]

The creators describe that Arma's design development was complicated, with many small details. The authors based the design of Arma on the appearance of Sido, and if Sido's slim body was easy to give female forms, then giving Sido the monstrous face was more complicated. Arma's white color refers to Rem. The transparency of the shoulder elements increased the amount of visual information and complicated the rendering of the model, so the animators thought to make the wings opaque, but still decided to leave this detail. The animators noticed that over the 10 years since the premiere of the last movie with the Gods of Death, more than 10 years passed, during which the computing capabilities of computers increased, but the tool ZBrush helped the most, which makes it much easier to simulate small details like wrinkles on the face. ^[21]

Bepo

The God of Death, which appeared in the mini-series Death Note: The New Generation and in the film Death Note: The Light of the New World . His image is based on the god of death from the original anime - Delilah Guilors. ^[21] It looks like a very tall god of death with a golden head and body, six-fingered arms and legs of gray-metal color, a dark cloak on his shoulders. ^[29]

The god of death was created using computer graphics and motion capture technology. The creators describe that it was easy to develop a design, but it was hard to convey the correct shinigami body texture, and I had to consult a lot. there were five fingers on the character’s concept art, but the director decided that it would be better if the Shinigami shows with one hand gesture that there are six death notebooks in the world. ^[21]

Critics praised the Shinigami computer graphics in Death Note: The New Generation and in Death Note: The Light of the New World, including Bepo, calling it intimidating and awesome ^[29] , and commenting that it gives more personality to the computer death gods than the characters of real actors. ^[27]

Other Death Gods

The rest of the Gods of Death do not play an important role in the plot. In general, the life they lead is pretty monotonous: they kill people only to extend their lives (since the rest of the life of a person whose name is written in the Death Note goes to the Shinigami) they sleep a lot and constantly play cards or dice ^{[30 ]} .

The story of Ryuk causes them some curiosity, they watch what is happening among people from their world. Ryuk’s behavior is not always clear to them ^[31] .

Armonia Justin Beyondlemayson

Creation and Design : Obata stated that while working on Justin's body, he was inspired by Tibetan art that uses skulls. The artist also used ideas gleaned from images of Italian antique accessories that show faces covered with precious stones ^[33] .

Delil Guilors

Киндара Гуивелостайн

Правила и законы

В мире богов смерти кроме правил Тетрадей смерти существуют и законы, которые регулируют не возможности владельцев Тетрадей, а действия самих богов смерти.

Если синигами нарушит какой-либо закон, то его проступок получит один из уровней серьёзности правонарушений, в зависимости от того, какой из законов был нарушен. Всего уровней десять: начиная с наименее серьёзного девятого уровня и заканчивая первым, плюс специальный уровень за особо серьёзные нарушения. Если проступок Бога Смерти отнесён к третьему или выше уровню серьёзности правонарушения, то провинившийся будет убит после поимки.

К примеру, убийство человека без использования Тетради смерти относится к специальному (экстремальному) уровню правонарушений ^[2] , а разглашение информации о нахождении Тетрадей смерти или их владельцев людям влечёт за собой второй уровень наказания.

Художник манги Такеси Обата, сказал, что ему было очень весело во время создания образов богов смерти. Но также он назвал этот процесс очень трудным, так как он начинал с пустого места. Во время работы концепция образов богов смерти несколько раз менялась. Его первоначальная идея Рюка состояла в том, что он выглядел как юноша похожий на Лайта, но с чёрными волосами и крыльями ^[15] , потому что у него была мысль, изображать богов смерти как привлекательных рок-звезд. Но потом отказался от этого, потому что редактор сказал, что это будет сбивать читателей и они будут считать, что главный герой Рюк, а не Лайт. ^[3] По словам Обаты во время работы над остальными богами смерти, первые боги создавались похожими на зверей, а более поздние как Сидо уже на основе ракообразных и насекомых. Также Обата сказал, что в самом начале основывал синигами на образах волшебников, но решил отказаться от этой идеи, так что тряпки на некоторых синигами являются остатком этой концепции.

При проектировании царства богов смерти Обата сказал, что он использовал настоящие пейзажи и что он никогда не останавливался на каком-то конкретном образе. Он указал, что царство богов смерти меняется при каждом своём появлении, иногда это кажется сухим полем и иногда кажется, что это комната полная костей. Обата говорит, что ему нравится думать об этом как о заброшенном здании с кусками стали вокруг.
