Life and work

Jules Cheret was born into a printer family. The family was financially in need, and Jules left school at the age of 13, enrolling in lithography for three years. Then he attended the National School of Design in Paris. He was a self-taught artist, not having received any systematic education. In his youth, Shere often visited Paris museums; Rococo painters, primarily Watteau and Fragonard, had the greatest influence on him.

After completing his apprenticeship, Sheret left for London in 1854 , where he made sketches for a furniture manufacturing company, but, disappointed, he soon returned to Paris. In 1858 he received his first major order - for advertising posters for the new operetta of Jacques Offenbach's “ Orpheus in Hell ”. In 1859, the artist again went to London. Here he studies the English technology of color lithography, creates covers for books and advertising posters for various companies, products and events. For the perfume manufacturer Rimmel, Shere develops the design of packaging and perfume bottles .

In 1866, the artist returned to Paris, where he opened a printing and graphic workshop. Having bought machinery for printing large-format posters and posters in England, J. Scheret simplified the process of color lithography at the same time, making it possible to make prints with two different colors from one “stone”. In addition, Shere created a new artistic style of poster image, the forerunner of modern art. Based on the development laid down by Shere, the mastery of the poster was mastered and developed by such artists as Toulouse-Lautrec , T.-A. Steinlen , Eugene Grasse , Albert Guillaume .

After the noisy success of his work, Sheret ceases direct management of the printing workshop, leaving only the artistic leadership. In the period from 1896 to 1900 he publishes a collection of the best posters of Parisian artists in a reduced format. This series was also a great success and caused many imitations. The artist participated in the World Exhibitions of 1878 and 1889 , at which his works won gold and silver medals, respectively. In 1890 , 1900 , 1910 and in 1926, Shere was awarded various degrees of the Order of the Legion of Honor . Sheret was friendly with many prominent French artists. Among them are Claude Monet , Edgar Degas , Georges Seurat , Auguste Rodin , Theophile Steinlen , Toulouse-Lautrec , Jacques Villon .

In old age he settled in the south of France. In 1925, he lost his sight. He died at the age of 96, was buried in the Saint-Vincent cemetery in the Paris quarter of Montmartre . In 1933 , a year after Sheret's death, a large exhibition was held at the Autumn Salon of Paris - a retrospective of his work.
