In the Popovka river valley, there are geological outcrops of steeply inclined Paleozoic rocks, sometimes even collected in small folds. By its decree of March 29, 1976, the Leningrad Executive Committee decided to take under state protection a section of the Popovka River valley where outcrops are located ( List of Specially Protected Natural Areas of St. Petersburg ) . By the Decree of the Government of St. Petersburg dated 25.12.2013 N 1043 "On the nature monument of regional significance" Popovka River Valley "the natural complex of the Popovka river valley was declared the nature monument of regional significance" Popovka River Valley ", and the territory occupied by it is a specially protected natural area In accordance with the Nature Monument Passport, the tasks of declaring the complex as a nature monument are the conservation and restoration of landscape and biological diversity in St. Petersburg, with protection of the natural complex of the canyon-like valley of the Popovka river with outcrops of Paleozoic rocks; creation of conditions for the development of environmental and cultural education. Flowing south of Pavlovsk , this river cut through a deep canyon in the middle reaches. composed of ancient rocks - mainly sandstones and limestones.

The riverbanks are known for a number of geological outcrops, where deposits of the Lower and Middle Cambrian, Lower and Middle Ordovician, Middle Devonian and Quaternary formations are brought to the surface. Outcrops of bluish-gray clay are visible on the right bank of the river, under a thin quaternary cover, on the banks of the valley and in the channel of the river. On the left bank is an inverted block - a glacial rejector. In ancient rocks you can find petrified animals: brachopods and cephalopods, trilobites, echinoderms, and even traces of long-extinct polyps. On the steep slopes and on the terraces, bird cherry trees, gray alder, and willows grow. In the floodplain of the river you can meet spring chistak, buttercup anemone, Kashubian buttercup.

Now the banks and part of the river canyon are highly cultivated, littered, partly overgrown with Sosnovsky cow parsnip . The territory of the swamp, from which the river flows, is privately owned and is planned for drainage and development of low-rise apartment buildings [2] in connection with plans for the construction of the so-called satellite town “Yuzhny” [3] .
