Biography
Jacob Zhao Quanxin was born in 1856 into a Catholic family in Taiyuan, Shanxi province. After serving in the army, he married and moved to Taiyuan city with his family, where he began to serve the Catholic priest in the temple. In the second half of the 19th century, China had strong anti-Christian sentiments. They reached their peak in 1899-1901. during the uprising, the rebellion of boxers , when in China began a massive persecution of Christians. By order of the governor of Shanxi, at the end of June 1900 two Catholic bishops Francis Fogoll and Gregory Maria Grassi were arrested with a large group of Catholics, among whom were three priests, seven nuns , seven seminarians , ten laymen. Jacob Zhao Quanxin visited the detainees every day. Because of his zeal, Jacob Zhao Quanxin was accused of sympathizing with the convicts, was arrested on July 9, 1900, and executed on the same day with the rest of those arrested.
Jacob Zhao Quanxin was beatified on November 24, 1946 by Pope Pius XII and canonized on October 1, 2000 by Pope John Paul II along with a group of 120 Chinese martyrs .
