In 1957 he graduated from the Chuguev Military Aviation School of Pilots . He served in the combat units of the Air Force.
Since 1960, a member of the CPSU .
Since November 1964 - on flight test work at the State Red Banner Scientific and Testing Institute of the Air Force (GK NII VVS city of Akhtubinsk ).
In 1967 he graduated from the Akhtuba branch "Rise" of the Moscow Aviation Institute .
Participated in comparative tests of the F-5E fighter.
From March 1971 to April 1972 he participated in the hostilities in Egypt. He made 8 sorties on the MiG-25R (reconnaissance). Stogov, along with several other pilots led by Colonel Alexander Savvich Bezhevets , one of the leading test pilots of the MiG-25 , was tested by the MiG-25R in a real combat situation. Stogov received the Egyptian order.
In 1973, he conducted state tests of the supersonic interceptor Su-15bis . He also participated in state trials of supersonic combat aircraft MiG-23 , MiG-25R , MiG-27 , Su-17 , Su-24 and other fighters.

On February 16, 1982, Colonel N. I. Stogov , the head of the unit’s service, was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union by a decree of the Presidium of the USSR Supreme Soviet and was awarded the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal (No. 11467) for testing and mastering new military equipment and showing courage and heroism.
April 28, 1982 died during a test flight on the MiG-27 [1] .
Stogov performed a simple task for an experienced pilot - flying around the monitoring and recording equipment on the MiG-27 . At an altitude of 6000 meters at subsonic speed, he made several gentle sets of heights and the same reductions, and suddenly went to the ground without saying a word on the walkie-talkie. The plane gradually increased the dive angle and speed, but the pilot did not intervene in control almost to the ground.
Surviving records of the KZA showed that right before the hit Nikolai completely took the control handle on himself, but it was too late - after a moment the plane crashed into the ground at a speed of about 900 km / h.
The exact cause of the disaster could not be established, it is only known that the pilot for some time could not control the plane - either completely unconscious, or in prostration.
He was buried at the Ikar’s Wing memorial ( Akhtubinsk ).
He was awarded the orders of Lenin , the Red Banner of Labor , the Red Star , and medals [2] .
Memoirs of Contemporaries
According to the memoirs of Boris Antonovich Orlov , Hero of the Soviet Union (10/11/1974), Honored Test Pilot of the USSR (08/17/1979), USSR master of sports of international class (1973), senior lieutenant of the reserve:
Nikolai turned out to be an interesting person, very well-read, with a clear, principled position on many issues, maybe even somewhat stubborn. He was a wonderful pilot, a real tester, cold-blooded, prudent. He always carried out the task precisely, “brought” good, valuable test materials and, very importantly, was extremely reliable: when he flew, everyone on earth knew that the flight would be carried out accurately and competently, in case of any failure the pilot would take a quick and the right decision, if the weather deteriorates sharply, then Stogov will land even in fog. I flew with Nikolai on the MiG-31 when he performed his first flight in this difficult car, and I remember how he confidently and clearly piloted a new plane for himself, as if it was not the first time flying it.
At first glance, somewhat dry, very restrained, far from sentimentality, in fact, Nikolai was a gentle, delicate person: I don’t remember the case when he swore a careless person in elevated tones, never heard a swear word from him, even in an environment where many unleash languages. Strict to himself, he was not so strict with his subordinates, and it seemed to me that this somehow prevented him from showing himself as a commander, but soon I saw that he was not only respected, but also loved, and this helped Stogov to fulfill difficult commander duties among knowledgeable test pilots.
Nikolai Ilyich, a man is a legend, like many of his peers. An intellectual, a real PILOT. I have never heard a swear word from him. At party meetings I always "dozed" and very respectfully treated subordinates. On that last day I went to him with a report, and he is working on a flight mission (he was deputy for the head of the 1st Directorate of the Republic of Lithuania) and says that "if he suffers, come on then ..." Two hours later, the head of the institute called and ordered to prepare all the information for the year on the fact of loss of communication with the board. At that time, I led the objective control group. Colonel General Agurin was the head of the institute, and Migunov Valery Valentinovich - the head of the Directorate.
