Biography
He grew up in the family of a priest in Pomerania. Since 1907 he lived with his family in Berlin , first studied at the Stern Conservatory , then at the Institute of Church Music, where among his mentors were Arnold Ebel (composition), Fritz Heitmann (organ) and Julius Dalke (piano). Having completed his education in 1921, he taught in Berlin, then worked as an organist in Neubrandenburg . In 1930 - 1950 Wenzel was an organist and choirmaster of St. Peter's Church in Görlitz , led the city music festival, and in 1947 he headed the School of Church Music, founded in the city. In 1951 - 1965 he was the principal of the Evangelical School of Church Music in Halle . Subsequently, Wenzel retired and moved to West Germany, where he spent the rest of his life in the family of his eldest daughter.
Wenzel owns about 800 works, mainly organ and choral, including the oratorio Passion for the Mark, Requiem Media vita in morte sumus, Deutsche Mass, etc.
In the course of his many years of activity, Wenzel was awarded the Silesian Music Prize (1938) and the Buxtehude Prize from the city of Lübeck (1957), was elected an Honorary Doctor of the Department of Theology at the University of Heidelberg (1962).
