Development History
The field of Mount Vysokaya was discovered by local Voguls and declared to the authorities in 1696. Operation began in 1721 [2] [3] .
The development of the deposit was started by the Demidovs , who built in 1725, 4 versts from the mountain on the Tagil River, the Nizhny Tagil Iron and Steel Plant . After the death of Akinfiy Nikitich Demidov, the mountain was divided into 6 sections, which began to belong to the Nizhny Tagil, Nevyansk, Alapaevsky, Verkhisetsky, Revdinsky and Suksunsky factories and were developed independently of each other [2] .
The development was unsystematic and predatory, as a result of which the entire mountain was pitted with erratic recesses, hollows and pits. The richest ore was selected, the poorer remained untouched in the form of separate rocks that interfere with the passage. Ore with an iron content of up to 68% was sent to dumps [2] .
High-quality magnetites mined at the deposit by the Vysokogorsky GOK contained from 60 to 67% iron, had a low content of harmful impurities, and low melting point. The ores also contained useful components in the form of manganese oxide (up to 2.84%) and copper (from 0.1 to 0.2-0.8%). Iron made from cast iron smelted from high-mountain ore with the stigma “ Old Sable ” was considered one of the best and was in great demand in Western Europe and the USA [2] .
In 1990, due to the depletion of the deposit, open pit mining was discontinued. Currently, on the site of the former Vysokaya mountain, there is a funnel-shaped pit about 200 m deep [4] .
